JUNE – Samoan Language Week

This year we celebrated Samoan Language week with our students and embraced both the culture and language through integrated activities.  The theme ‘Efelelei manu ae ma’au I o latou ofaga’ ‘Birds migrate to environments where they survive and thrive’ was timely for this year as we have been focussing on the School wide theme ‘Creative Native’.  We have 53% of students at Rise UP Academy who identify themselves as part or full samoan.  We began the festivities by opening with a traditional Lotu and Prayer led by Rev Uaita Levi and a special powhiri held by our staff and students for our E.R.O Visitors. We were also privileged to have the Samoan Pre-School ‘Puna o le atamai’ from Mangere who came and sang songs and performed the well-known story about ‘Sina and the Eel’. The week ended with a shared lunch, some special class items and our junior boys performing the ‘Siva Tau’ Samoan Haka.
